Description:

This super-modified-style sprint car is one of several #99 cars built for and owned by Bogar's Speed Shop owner Luke Bogar of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and was at one time campaigned by sprint National Open winner Gene Varner. This car was built and campaigned in the mid-1960s, and refurbishment included rebuilding its 390ci Ford V8 and refinishing the steel body. The equipment list is vast and outlined below.

Interior:

The cockpit is enclosed by a roll cage and equipped with a black vinyl low-back bucket seat as well as an RJS Racing five-point latch-and-link harness. The four-spoke steering wheel fronts a body-color steel panel that bears the signature of Gene Varner's wife and equipped with a run/start toggle switch as well as Equus gauges for coolant temperature and oil pressure.

Exterior:

The steel body wears orange and black #99 Bogar's Special racing livery with black-finished bumper bars affixed up front, out back, and on both sides. Features include a lift-off hood with a round air filter opening as well as a wire screen rock guard.

Drivetrain:

The 390ci FE-series Ford V8 was rebuilt and features a Holley four-barrel carburetor, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, a Vertex-style Ronco magneto, and black ceramic-coated headers flowing directly into turned-out side exhaust tips. Recent service includes rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the spark plugs and filters. The car was acquired without oil in the crankcase. Oil was added for a start-up video in the gallery below, and then drained. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a direct drive system utilizing a Culbert Automotive Engineering in-and-out gearbox as well as a quick-change differential for which the fluid was changed in preparation for the sale. Halibrand model 2006 magnesium 15″ racing wheels up front are wrapped in a mixed set of Firestone tires, while silver-finished 15″ steel wheels at the back are mounted with 11.00-15″ Hoosier angle-block dirt oval tires. Stopping is handled by four-wheel disc brakes, and steering is provided a Gordon Schroeder box with right-side linkage. Suspension consists of adjustable radius rods assisted by hydraulic dampers up front and an adjustable four-link setup with hydraulic dampers and a panhard bar out back.
