At the end of the '70s amidst a period of great change within Ducati, there was a need to quickly find an alternative to the antiquated V-shaped 2-cylinder engine featuring bevel gears. Engineer Fabio Taglioni, the father of all the Ducati engines of the mod-ern era and inventor of the famous Desmodromic distribution system, got down to work and produced the innovative “Pantah” engine, made from aluminum and featuring modern rubber toothed belts in place of bevel gears. Apart from the first production models, the “Pantah” engine was immediately put to the test in competitions, and in the hands of Tony Rutter won several world championships in the 600 cc. TT2 class in the early '80s. Eventually, Ducati decided to capitalize on these sporting successes and in 1985 the beautiful Ducati F1 was released, equipped with a 750 cc. Pantah engine and the incredible tubular frame designed by Taglioni, which perfectly replicated those used in competition. The F1 was the first production Ducati to use the minimalistic Ver-licchi frame, mono-shock rear suspension, fully floating disc brakes front and rear, alloy fuel tank, remote oil cooler, and two into one exhaust system. While the 750 was never as competitive in Formula 1 as its smaller stable mates had been in Formula 2, it soon proved to be the hot set for the newly formed and very popular "Battle of the Twins" class. The bikes did exceptionally well in both club races and world champion-ship events. The Ducati F1A and F1B were true race replicas, street going versions of the first of the “rubber band racers”. The F1 is a truly minimalistic bike; there is nothing ornamental or unnecessary about it, and it's every detail and component conveys this as the essence of a bike.
